It is on! TROHPIQ is very excited to be able to report the confirmation that the Extended Placement Program (originally planned for 2011) will be implemented in 2012. The change in rotation order for 3rd years affirms this, with the order to be:
- Medicine in Society (Rural)
- General Practice
- Surgery
- Mental Health
- Medicine
What is the Extended Placement Program?
It’s an opportunity for you to complete both your MiS (Rural) and GP placements in the one rural location. Why would you want to do this? Well, there are heaps of reasons, here are just a couple that we’ve thought of:
- It’s well known that you get more procedural experience in the bush - you’ll get to do more with your hands than anywhere else
- Your preceptors will invest more time in you because they know you’re keen and there for a while as you’ve been selected (see below)
- Enjoy free accommodation and zero hassles living. The lack-of-commute will give you more time on your hands to explore, chill… or study! Wing your lease to start after rotation 2 or expire before rotation 4 and you’ll save a tonne of money to boot!
- It’s an adventure! If you’ve spent substantial time in rural communities, you’ll know how warm they can be. They’re a lot of fun when you get to know some locals and they get to know you.
Where could you go?
The locations and preceptors have been picked because past experience has shown the doctors to be enthusiastic and the students’ experience excellent. Depending on the time of year, you’ll have the opportunity to study at St. George, Chinchilla, Emerald, Goondiwindi, Clifton, Inglewood, Millmerran, Oakey or Gatton.
How would it work?
Application: you must apply by June 24th. Your will be notified of your selection or otherwise in the following weeks. Then, you apply to your clinical school of choice as usual on August 8th with a rotation order preference outlined below.
Note: you will be reminded of these details upon successful selection.
Selection: you’ll be asked to submit answers to a few brief questions around why you want to go on the Program and what you hope to get out of it. Not much, but just enough to let us know you’re keen because no work on your part for something this good would be a crime!
Rotation order: the EPP would be offered to students as rotations 1 and 2 or 4 and 5. That is, you would preference either MiS as your first preference or Surgery as your first preference. In this way, your MiS rotation would fall on either rotations 1 or 4.
