South West Rural High School Visit

In February 2015, 6 students from Pharmacy, Occupational Therapy, Paramedics, Nursing and Medicine went out to experience rural Queensland, and expose rural high school students to the variety of health careers.

We spent time at St George SHS, Surat P-10 SS, and St Johns High in Roma. We explained the role of our respective disciplines through a case based presentation, and then got the high school students some hands on experience with some of the skills practiced in a number of health careers. These workshops included introduction to blood pressure and heart sounds, a plastering session, and reflexes.

Of course, the trip would not have been complete without experiencing ‘the outback’. We had a tour of Jondaryn Station with a sheep shearing demonstration, and the medical students on placement at Roma took us out to experience the Roma ‘nightlife’. We even had a local show us around the Roma Cattle sales.

All in all it was huge success with a great few days making new friends and having fun with high school students!

Thanks to the medical students that hosted us, to the girls that came along on the trip, the schools for having us visit and the NRHSN for funding it!
