Kate Thompson – QUT Pharmacy
I completed a placement in Grafton, NSW in late 2018. The town is situated on the beautiful Clarence river and has an interesting mix of agricultural and industrial industry. The area is also very short of general practitioners which results in interesting cases presenting at the pharmacy where I completed my placement. I had an awesome experience at Southside Pharmacy and gained a deeper appreciation of what it will by like practicing in a coastal/semi-rural area. The community is very welcoming and the area has great country town feel about it. The fishing is also fabulous!
Maginnis Connell – UQ Occupational Therapy
I completed ten weeks of block placement in a rural generalist occupational therapist (OT) position in Chinchilla. The range of service provision I saw was unlike anything you’d ever get in a city, as I worked from paeds through to palliative, in rehab and disabilities and acute injury.
Chinchilla was a great intro to rural prac, as I was able to drive home (3.5 hours) when needed, but was still out of the city.
The other OT student and I made an effort to get involved in the community, going to markets and festivals and joining a trivia team. While seeing patients everywhere around town took a bit of getting used to, the whole town was very welcoming and lovely.
